Faro

Faro
The capital of Algarve is sited on Portugal's most southerly headland. Faro lives on salt, fishing, it's cork factories and marble works, food processing and canning, it's plastic and building industries. After his victory against the Moors in 1249, King Alfons III presented the city with a municipal charter.

Churches
The Cathedral - Rebuilt in the 18C. Igreja do Carmo - with an ossuarium. Arco da Vila - The finest of the gateways in the old city wall.

Sights
Ilha de Faro - Long sandy beach/island. Miradouro de Santo António Arco da Vila Praça (square) Dom Francisco Gomes "Ruínas Romanas de Milreu" - In Estoí (8 km to the north).

Museum
Museu Marítimo - In the harbour-master's office. many model ships. Museu Municipal - In a former convent (16e eeuw)
The Ferreira de Almeida collectie: sculptures, 18C paintings and Spanish and Chinese furniture.
